The family room celebrates
this home’s English Arts & Crafts architecture
by utilizing natural, organic materials in contemporary
ways. Showing appreciation for craftsmanship, the fireplace
surround is clad in steel plate with copper patina and
rivets, and features
built-in bookcases on each side. Integral pull-out desks,
coupled with vintage Walter Groupius chairs, provide a
place to work while watching television for this busy family.
The feeling is warm and comfortable with a contemporary
edge.
The color palette is chocolate brown and tan with
punches of color and geometric pattern for excitement.
Furnishings are clean-lined, and some pieces have a slight
Japanese aesthetic, as is indicative of the English Arts
and Crafts movement. A Thai table made from a reclaimed
section of a teak log acts as a “conservatory” table,
and takes advantage of the wonderful light and space in
the window nook, while providing a place for sculpture,
books and unusual plants. A custom herringbone pattern
cow-hide rug adds texture, while the contemporary mesh
drapery softens the window expanse. Architectural lighting
and bark wallcovering, which was applied to a large scale
mirror, provides sculptural qualities throughout the space. |
