CREATING A FOCAL POINT IN YOUR ROOM

To create a focal point, you first must understand exactly what a focal point is.
A focal point is a point of interest, it is the first thing that stands out when you
walk into a room. It can be architectural such as a fireplace or built-in
bookshelves, or you can create a focal point using color, pattern or furnishings
that draw attention. A larger room may have more than one focal point, usually
achieved by creating groupings of furniture. A room without a focal point lacks
interest or appeal.
FIREPLACES
This common element can be easily
embellished to draw your eye into the
room. A plain or understated fireplace
can come alive with interesting artwork
and / or accessories. Fireplaces equipped
with a mantel seem to demand something
be placed onto it. Scale and proportion is
important – a large fireplace requires
larger artwork and accessories, while
a smaller fireplace needs smaller
embellishments. If you have the space,
a bench placed in front of the fireplace
will give your room a feeling of warmth.
Be careful not to let your TV or other
electronics steal the show from your
fireplace!

FOYERS & ENTRY HALLS
This is one of the most important features of your home and
should offer a sampling of the colors and style throughout.
Create a composition with artwork or furnishings that greets
everyone who enters. A decorative screen with an
interesting chair will draw attention and add drama.
LIVING ROOMS
A living room without a fireplace or architectural built-in
element can be most interesting by creating a composition
of furniture, artwork and accessories. When creating a
composition, it's important to choose pieces that relate to
one another through coloration, theme and placement. A
cocktail table is a great place to create a composition. Books
with captivating covers, dried or fresh florals and artwork
can be combined. Candles are a great way to add color and
aroma to your room.
If privacy isn't an issue, a beautifully-crafted window with a
lovely view can be left without window treatments to create
a stunning focal point. Also, stained glass used in conjunction
with clear glass can draw attention to a window.
BEDROOMS
This is an easy one – the bed is always the
focal point in a bedroom, even if it includes
a fireplace. Embellish your bed with the best
linens and coverings you can afford, and
throw pillows are a must. Don't feel tied to
one look overall, mix things up by choosing
two different nightstands rather than a
matched set.
