Vacation Inspiration

We wouldn’t grow as people if we remained forever in our little corner of the globe. For designers, travel serves as a conduit for creativity and inspiration. Perhaps centuries-old mosaics in India, hand-blown Murano glass viewed in Italy, or the turquoise beaches of Mexico will find their way into a designer’s repertoire once he or she arrives back home. A region’s architecture, geography, flora, and even cuisine can inspire, too.

Vacation Spots as Design Muses III

We embark on the final leg of our virtual summer vacation with visits to Capri and Scotland.

Sunny Italy was seductive for Jimmy Angell, of James Douglas Interiors, particularly the island of Capri. He recalls its enchanting allure with fondness. “Capri was such a sensory experience: the fresh scent of lemon and the beautiful colors in the landscape. A certain calm comes over you.”

Vacation Spots as Design Muses II

We continue our virtual summer vacation with a tour of Italy, which provided immense inspiration for designers Krista Nye Nicholas and Tami Ramsay, of CLOTH & KIND. In fact, they called their recent journey “a design inspiration trip.”

As they explain, “Our personal mantra at CLOTH & KIND is to design spaces with history and heart, with story and substance, which invariably includes mixing old with new, and creating rich layers of texture and patina, so for us Italy was the ultimate inspiration.”

We wouldn’t grow as people if we remained forever in our little corner of the globe. For designers, travel serves as a conduit for creativity and inspiration. Perhaps textiles seen at a Moroccan souk, hand-blown Murano glass viewed in Italy, or colorful tiles spotted in a Mexican cantina will find their way into a designer’s repertoire once he or she arrives back home. A region’s architecture, geography, flora, and even cuisine can inspire, too.

Color Matters

Color is a powerful tool that can make a room feel calm, cheerful, comfortable or energetic. We asked a few top designers to share how they incorporate color into their designs.

Color is unexpected in this modern living room as designer Diane Hancock uses a yellow ceiling paint against a stark white wall to draw the eye up and emphasize the ceiling height of the adjacent room.

Decoration by Inspiration

Design inspiration can be found everywhere, contends Terry Ellis of Room Service Interior Design, and it can be employed in design to create something personal and customized. Whether that inspiration is from a far-away vacation, or just down the street, Ellis suggests to “let your guard down and look around, something might just call your name.” Spaces inspired by a family vacation, or a park in your neighborhood will always be a meaningful reminder of a special time or place.
