“Trend forecasting” is always a hot topic this time of year, so we asked designers and showroom staff which design trends they have seen emerge recently and believe will continue to gain steam in 2018. Conversely, we were curious to learn which trends they believe have overstayed their welcome.

Total Transformations

MDC’s “Total Transformations” Home Tour was a great success, so we thought it appropriate to highlight some of the dramatic transformations that were on display during the tour, as well as several additional renovations completed by the area’s top designers.

Vacation Homes

While permanent residences in Michigan are concentrated mainly in the state’s southern metropolitan areas, Michiganders’ vacation homes are located primarily in more rural areas in the northern part of the state with amenities close by. And as Michiganders near their retirement, a goal for many is to own a winter home located in a warmer climate such as Florida or Arizona. A few of metro Detroit’s top designers shared their clients’ relaxing vacation homes.

Thanksgiving is a special time of year that calls us to gather with family members, enjoy a wonderful feast, and reminisce on cherished memories while creating new ones. Outdoor Living

Creating a relaxing outdoor space has come a long way from propping up a couple of Adirondack chairs on the porch or stringing up a line of Chinese lanterns over the deck. These days, outdoor spaces are much more sophisticated and rival many indoor rooms in comfort and livability. Outdoor furnishings are more refined, lighting and audio are more technologically advanced, and landscaping possibilities are virtually limitless. Furniture and fabrics are more resistant to the elements, too.
