We embark on the final leg of our virtual summer vacation with visits to Capri and Scotland.

Sunny Italy was seductive for Jimmy Angell, of James Douglas Interiors, particularly the island of Capri. He recalls its enchanting allure with fondness. “Capri was such a sensory experience: the fresh scent of lemon and the beautiful colors in the landscape. A certain calm comes over you.”

We continue our virtual summer vacation with a tour of Italy, which provided immense inspiration for designers Krista Nye Nicholas and Tami Ramsay, of CLOTH & KIND. In fact, they called their recent journey “a design inspiration trip.”

As they explain, “Our personal mantra at CLOTH & KIND is to design spaces with history and heart, with story and substance, which invariably includes mixing old with new, and creating rich layers of texture and patina, so for us Italy was the ultimate inspiration.”

Vacation Spots as Design Muses

We wouldn’t grow as people if we remained forever in our little corner of the globe. For designers, travel serves as a conduit for creativity and inspiration. Perhaps textiles seen at a Moroccan souk, hand-blown Murano glass viewed in Italy, or colorful tiles spotted in a Mexican cantina will find their way into a designer’s repertoire once he or she arrives back home. A region’s architecture, geography, flora, and even cuisine can inspire, too.
